Breathe in Focus, Hold, Think. Breathe out. Smile and say “Ahhhhh” or thank you.
To launch is defined as “to set in motion, to propel with force, hurl, to release or to send off. Every child is released from the womb and sent off into the world. But children get launched in so many ways and their progress, their strength goes beyond beauty to awe-inspiring. So I will be doing a week on children launching into life. Today is Sibling Response Day.
Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being.
Albert Camus, Philosopher
THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS PICTURE: One of my grands seen by the adults as expressing his dissatisfaction with having been launched. Gave us all a chuckle. Thank you Auntie E.
Much of my work as a mental health professional was dealing with children who garnered the DSM VI label Oppositional Defiant Disorder. One of the hallmarks of the disorder was the constancy of their rebellion. Offer such a child a $10.00 raise in allowance and they would insist on getting their usual $5.00.
Stand outside of a elementary school at dismissal time, and you will might see a child running wild, in and out of cars and buses with one or two adults trying to catch them. If the adults were up on this disorder they would not have chased, in fact they would turn tail and run the other way. The child would follow.
I loved working with ODDs as I called them, difficult, but when you could finally get such a child to pick and choose behavior, you usually had a leader with a very good sense of what mattered. I firmly believe without ODD children we would all be sitting in trees, shivering. ODDs played with fire, burnt down the family home and took us into dark, scary caves.
STAYING STRONG TIP: Kindness moves the world toward peace, but so does considered rebellion. Considered is the trick. Worries this Cranky Old Lady when rebellion is knee jerk. Not helpful whether just going along with the crowd or rebellion just to rebel. Watch for my Powerleading post later, will talk a bit about how to tame a too ODD kid or student or employee.
Share, like, and care and help me, yourself, and others get and stay strong.
