MEMORIES CREATE EMOTIONAL STRENGTH

Quotes about memories

A  HOLOCAUST STORY. How one woman used memories to help her survive.

I held in my mind the picture of a cold snowy night in our humble, little, home in Budapest, Hungary. There was a cozy fire in the glowing fireplace. Papa was studying a book of Talmud and Momma was knitting. My sister Gittel and brother Yakov were doing school homework in their bedrooms. I had nothing at all to do and was bored, terribly bored. That memory is what kept me going. An ordinary, boring, snowy, night with nothing to do but laze around the house, occasionally watching the snowfall and then examining the geometric patterns of the frost that formed on the frigid windows. I held that glorious vision in my deepest heart and soul. The Nazis had my body but they could never intrude into my soul. Every night as I lay shivering in the freezing cold of that hellish death camp, I would retreat to my inner spirit and the sacred memories of being with my loving family back home, on a glorious, typical, boring, night with nothing to do. I can still smell the sweet fragrance of the smoke from that glowing fireplace. Our home was a Holy Place where G-d Dwelled. Thus, I stayed alive.

Emotional Fitness Tips

One: Keep a memory book. Journaling is one way.

Two: Surround yourself with things that speak of good memories. Pictures, sea shells, whatever.

Three: Make a conscious effort to be with beauty and nature.

Four: Observe Gottman’s Five in One rule. Nurture five good memories for each bad one. Don’t deny the bad just override it.
