Emotional Fitness Tips
Tip one: Remember, any label pasted on a person is but a drop in the ocean of who that person is.
Tip two: Know that, our brains are programmed to use labels. Labels make thinking easier, but not more reality based.
Tip three: See the strong feelings that drive thought and behavior as a signal to slow down, stay calm so you can think carefully before acting. Acting on strong feelings without careful thought finds all doing things they regret or should regret.
Tip four: Keep learning about all people including yourself. Each of us is an ocean of complexity. The more you know about you, your bad side as well as your good side, the more you will understand; the more you understand, the more you act more wisely;
Tip five: Stay safe, do not reward unacceptable behavior. Understanding another does not mean letting them behavior cruelly. Cruel behavior must be punished. When the unacceptable behavior is contained, then practice forgiveness of yourself and others. Forgiveness at this level means not seeking revenge.
Tip six: Beef up your self-soothing skills. The more you build calmness into your life, the more you can escape the trap of victimhood. Explore and learn what Marsha Linehan calls Radical Acceptance.
