Much is made today of protecting children’s feelings. Here is another approach which has some merit. I remember having to teach my sons to defend themselves from kids who had no reluctance throwing a punch or calling names. I don’t like violence, but I do believe when attacked you need to know how to defend yourself. Emotional defense is as important as physical defense for life is hard and it is our job as parents to strengthen our children to handle pain. The father in this song was a caring father.
I was looking for another poem of Shel Silverstein’s. He is a poet I love and I didn’t know he had written the lyrics to this song. Johnny Cash is also one of my favorite singers from my youth. Enjoy, grow strong, and teach your children self defense and how to stay when negative emotions come calling.
