In other words, like a duck let the trivial roll off your back and swim away.
Current research agrees with the sages of the ages. If you want the good life, treat others as you want to be treated. Karma means at the most basic level your kindness will be rewarded, if only by the good feelings you garner for doing the right thing.
Research also notes people are driven by a Tit for Tat mentality. If people treat you kind, you are 99.9% likely to return their kindness. Same when you are mean.
The trick, of course, is to return meanness with kindness. That generally works well and when it does not work, you have learned an important lesson.
