THINKING ABOUT WHAT MATTERS

UNUSUAL–A SUGGESTED TOPIC OF THE WEEK FROM WORD PRESS.  All the religions, all philosophies, all sages, and  most scientists preach and teach that the good life is the loving life.

If we practiced what is so universally preached, peace would be usual, but it is not.  I have always loved this poem by Edwin Markham:

He drew a circle that shut me out–
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!

War is more usual than peace because the Golden Rule gets applied to those in our circle.  Not the others.

This article echoes the call to be selfish enough to be kind.  Surprising, what doing something for others seems to do is expand your sense of time.  When  you give time to others,  your perception of how busy or stressed you are changes.

Real Good For Free: The Paradox of Leisure Time – Association for Psychological Science.

Quote: “I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to do at the end of the work day is do more work for free. The TV is so tempting, or if I can motivate myself, maybe the exercise bike. These findings suggest these indulgences may just be adding to my pressurized life. The fact is, Americans have more leisure time than ever before in history. We just don’t feel that we do. Giving away some of this abundant leisure time may be the key to feeling as leisurely as we are in fact.”

STAYING STRONG TIP:  Do the unusual.  Step out of your usual circles.  Be kind to those on the outside.  You will be stronger for it and the world will be just a bit closer to making peace, not war.
