Tourists Seek Beauty; Five Tips to Find It Wherever You Are

Wherever your faith, whatever  name you give the greater glory beyond, you can find wonder and beauty, here now.  Finding it is only a matter of awareness and focus. Here are tips to achieve both.

Tip one: Learn to meditate. Meditation seeks total awareness of now which means being with fully with beauty when and where you find it.  

That is bad news for some because sitting to meditate even for fifteen minutes feels burdensome to many.  Some are just too busy. Others are hyper.

I’m very hyper, so traditional meditation did not work for me.  The One Minute Meditation better known as the OMM did.  Here is how to OMM:

  1. Breathe in slowly to a count of five.
  2. Hold your breath for a count of five.
  3. Breathe out slowly to another count of five.
  4. Breathe normally and simply observe how it feels to breathe in and out.
  5. If thoughts make their presence known,  observe them and continue breathing; the same with feelings.
  6. At the end of a minute, sooner if you want, take a deep breathe in, hold it for a count of five.
  7. As you breathe out, say a silent “Ahhhhhh” or “Thank you” and smile softly.

Practice the OMM until you can do it comfortably and without having to read the exercise.  That takes as little as five times for some, twenty-five for others.

Here’s an added bonus: the OMM can be used to calm you when stress mounts. When you are aware of being stressed, OMM. To strengthen the OMM’s calming effect, after the first breath, add a two or three word calming mantra as you continue breathe in and out.  “Life goes on” works for some,   “Staying strong” for others, still others craft their own mantra.

Tip two: Once you have perfected the OMM use it to focus  on  beauty. Here’s the short form. As you first breathe in, focus on the beauty, pull it into your awareness, keep your focus as you hold your breath; finally as you breathe out remember to smile and say thank you.

Tip three: Extend the power of this exercise by learning to  find beauty wherever you are; as the sage Confucius  noted, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

One trick when beauty is not immediately visible  is to narrow your focus. Find a picture in a museum unappealing? Focus on what you do find appealing. Perhaps that is a color, the way a line swirls, or a form takes shape.

Use the picture above to practice narrowing your focus. Find in the rocks, or the green of the tree, the dark shadows, the shades of orange and pink.  Then pull back and enjoy the whole.

Tip four: Create beauty to call on wherever you are.  One flower, a picture of a flower, a color rock, or a lovely sea shell placed here and there where you spend time allow you to be with beauty as you go through your day.

Tip five: Search for beauty in other ways and when you find it, take a few seconds to be with it. One place to search is on the internet. Many people use Facebook to share beauty.
