I pray, you pray, we all pray. As the old cliché goes. There are no atheists in fox holes.
The problem with not believing in one God is that you rely on yourself, on humanity or a number of gods. The call for one God recognizes that when you have many Gods, so there is no one source of final wisdom. Maybe there isn’t. But do we really know?
When our backs against the wall and life has pushed us down to our knees and out hearts cry out for help, those who pray to God prefer the comfort and hope that comes from believing there is something more out there. Moreover, the hope is a source of love and good that humankind is not capable of understanding.
Do not agree? Your right. Also your right to hold varying views of God as described by your religion or your sacred texts. What is not your right when it comes to other people’s beliefs or religion? Demeaning, character assassinations, destroying religious property, forcing conversion, torturing or killing in the name of God.
Jerome Kagan and Shelia Lamb did research seeking to understand how morality develops. Their book, The Development of Morality in Children notes that all cultures hold to two ideas about what is right and what is wrong.
- Caring for the weak and dependent
- Being fair and just to all
Then why is the world in such bad shape? My answer: Three reasons;
- Tribalism, nationalism and the like
- Caring only for our own
- Caring only for ourselves
Believe what you want, but act with kindness and generosity to all.
